Building inclusive gyms
Strength in Diversity is a community led initiative created by people with disability to help make gyms more welcoming and inclusive. Our goal is simple: to increase visibility, challenge outdated ideals of what a “gym body” looks like, and ensure that people with disabilities feel seen, valued, and supported in mainstream fitness spaces.
Our approach
We spoke directly with people with disabilities about what practical actions make a difference. These insights shaped a tip sheet for gym staff, offering clear, achievable steps that any gym can adopt to create a more welcoming environment.
We visited local gyms, held open conversations about disability inclusion, shared our posters and resources, and offered tailored support based on each gym’s needs.
Inclusion doesn’t mean ticking every box or getting it right every time. Partnering with Strength in Diversity is a commitment to adopting an inclusion mindset, to welcome conversations, acknowledge challenges, and take meaningful steps to reduce access barriers.
Andy’s story
As a member of the project steering committee, Andrew knows firsthand how powerful inclusive gym spaces can be.
“Going to the gym isn’t just about getting fitter,” Andrew says. “It’s about confidence, mental health, independence and feeling like you belong.”
Through lived experience and genuine partnership, Andrew is helping make gyms more inclusive, one conversation and one gym at a time.
Resources
We have developed a series of disability awareness posters and resources designed for gyms. Each poster features a real person with a disability and highlights their lived experience and perspectives.
These resources invite gymgoers to rethink assumptions, build disability allyship, and embrace a more inclusive fitness culture.
